With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting. “Maame” is a joy to read and was named the February 2023 book club pick on The Today Show.

2. Chain-Gang All-Stars – by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

“Chain-Gang All-Stars” is another amazing African-American book written by author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah that couldn’t miss on our list. The story follows two top women gladiators fighting for their freedom within a depraved private prison system not so far-removed from America’s own. This book won the 2023 National Book Award for Fiction and many more awards last year.

3. Black Candle Women – by Diane Marie Brown

“Black Candle Women” is a warm and wry family drama with a magical twist about four generations of Black women, a family love curse, and the secrets they keep for and from each other over one very complicated year. This one is a great recommendation for anyone in love with 2023 African-American fiction, Magical Realism, and Paranormal books.

4. One Blood – by Denene Millner

“One Blood” was released in 2023, keeping up with the pace of African-America literature. It is a powerful family saga following three women who are tied together by blood, love, and family secrets. There are many reasons for you to get a copy of this book and one of them is that, Denene Millner, a famous African-American author is also a New York Times bestseller. Hence, her books will never bore, of course.

5. The Survivalists – by Kashana Cauley

This 2023 African-American book by author Kashana Cauley follows a single Black lawyer who puts her career and personal moral code at risk when she moves in with her coffee entrepreneur boyfriend and his doomsday-prepping roommates. “The Survivalists” is packed with tension, curiosity, humor, making it one of the latest best African-American books.

6. Gone Like Yesterday – by Janelle M. Williams

If you are talking about debut book by an African-American author that also makes it to our top list, “Gone Like Yesterday” is the real deal. The novel was released in 2023 and follows two Black women; Zahra, a listless college prep coach. And Sammie, a teenage girl and budding activist soon off to college. These two are drawn to each other through the songs of gypsy moths. Gypsy moths have been singing the songs of Zahra’s ancestors to her for years, so when Zahra realizes that Sammie might be a moth person too, their paths become intertwined.

7. Quietly Hostile – by Samantha Irby 

“Quietly Hostile” is another top book we saw in 2023, capable of engaging readers till the end. It is a hilarious essay collection that is also a New York Times Bestseller and as well won the “Glamour Best Book of The Year” award. It is another ideal book for lovers of African-American books you may try out this year.

8. Decent People – by De’Shawn Charles Winslow

This is another amazing book by an award winning author we have on the list. “Decent People” was also released in 2023, and follows the story of Marian, Marva, and Lazarus Harmon-three enigmatic siblings-who are found shot to death in their home. The people of West Mills-on both sides of the canal that serves as the town’s color line-are in a frenzy of finger-pointing, gossip, and wonder. The crime is the first reported murder in the area in decades, but the white authorities don’t seem to care or have any interest in solving the case. That gives you a glimpse of what the whole book is about. Miss it at your own risk!

9. The House of Eve – by Sadeqa Johnson

“The House of Eve” is a totally heartbreaking historical fiction released last year (2023). It follows that story of Ruby Pearsall, a fifteen year old girl, who is on track to become the first in her family to attend college. However, her mother is more interested in keeping a man than raising a daughter. I won’t give away so much about the novel LOL! Just get it from any book stores near you or get a copy from Goodreads. You will not regret your time!

10. Black Folk – by Blair Murphy Kelley

Finally we have “Black Folk” as the last one on our list. It is still a 2023 release, named one of Smithsonian’s Best Books of 2023, and another of a kind from a celebrated African-American author. “Black Folk” is an award-winning historian, which illuminates the adversities and joys of the Black working class in America through a stunning narrative centered on her forebears.
